Fictional Worlds: Speaking & Listening
A PowerPoint presentation: each slide poses a discussion linked to fictional worlds. A variety of texts have been referred to but this could easily be edited to make it more applicable to a particular class. ‘Would you rather?’ questions are mixed with more detailed challenges involving vocabulary for effect and explaining preferences. It also allows students to consider what their own personally created fictional world might be like.

Fictional Worlds: Skim and Scan
5 x Skim and Scan activities to aid quick retrieval skills. Ideal prep for KS2 Reading SATs to support students finding information speedily. My class enjoyed using these with a timer. Children have a series of words to locate and circle within the extract - a textual word search! Each extract comes from a children’s book set in a fantasy world as part of the Fictional World collection of resources.
How to write a Winter Poem!
This activity booklet supports writing a winter poem in just SIX steps. Images are included as well as a word bank to support children who may need it.
All steps are modelled and students follow the format to produce their own poem. Could be used in class, as homework, or for home schooling. Suitable for KS2+.

Students must match the description of the beast to an image. Could be used as a starter or to support SEN children. Encourages consideration of vocabulary choices to aid description.
The Secret Garden - Skim & Scan Activity
Skim and Scan activity to aid speedy retrieval skills using an extract from The Secret Garden Children have to locate a series of words within the text, similar to a wordsearch. My class enjoy using an IWB timer to see how quickly then can locate all the words. Additional vocabulary extensions activity included.
Reading Activities - Movie Posters
This resource uses movie posters from a range of children and family films to engage with reading objectives. There is a focus on inference and prediction, encouraging children to use evidence to support their arguments. The included PowerPoint features questions that could be used for a whole class guided reading session, or one slide per day as part of an English lesson starter. The pdf features thumbnails of each poster as well as larger sized images for children to have a closer look and/or use to record their observations. Additionally, I have included a word document with ideas for further learning and activities.
This could also be used as part of cross curricula work on the history theme, Leisure & Entertainment, or as a Speaking & Listening lesson.
